This launch was successful due to a strong product-market fit, addressing common frustrations with a genuinely free and reliable solution. The transparency about its current cost structure (low Firebase expenses) and the explicit request for feedback created a positive and engaging environment for potential users on r/SideProject.
Addresses a clear pain point: Users are frustrated with existing budget tracking apps, especially regarding recurring transactions, time zone glitches, and syncing errors.
Offers a compelling value proposition: The app is completely free, simple, reliable, with no subscriptions, ads, or tracking.
Leverages a successful strategy: Making the app free at the start of 2024 has led to continuous user growth.
Demonstrates traction and social proof: Reached 8,000 daily active users and is #1 budget tracker in Germany on iOS.
Actively seeks feedback: The poster explicitly asks for user feedback, fostering community engagement.
In one of my apps I offered themes and customizations for pro users, but no additional features. I had a lot of paying customers, while I kept offering everything for free to everyone else.
wthjaI am currently not planning to make any money. I am paying 5 dollars a month for firebase. So I guess I could go up to 100-200k users before it starts to hurt. This is enough time so think about it :D
Old-Storage1099Just installed it. Great job man.
reticent_beingMany developer friends made bad experiences with donations. People donate way less than anyone thinks. For me it is about autonomy: I decide if I want to have money or not :) I dont want to be a supplicant.
Old-Storage1099That is actually a pretty nice idea! :)
